Casting the player in the role of a malevolent Dungeon Keeper, the game turns the traditional fantasy quest on its head. Rather than a noble hero, the player is the villain, tasked with carving out and managing a sprawling underground dungeon deep beneath the earth. From this dark domain, the Keeper recruits and cares for a host of monstrous minions, digging out chambers, hoarding treasure, and preparing for war. But the dungeon is far from safe: righteous "hero" adventurers repeatedly invade, seeking to plunder its riches, slay its creatures, and bring about the Keeper's downfall. Beating back these intruders is only the beginning. The ultimate ambition is nothing less than total conquest, crushing the heroic forces and rival Dungeon Keepers who hold sway over each realm, until the entire world falls under the shadow of evil.
